10 Tips For Buying a Pellet Smoker

1. Consider the Size and Cooking Area

Think about how much food you’ll be cooking regularly. If you’re hosting large gatherings, opt for a larger grill with ample cooking space. For smaller families or occasional use, a compact model might be more practical.

My first pellet smoker was medium-sized because I have a small household, but I like to entertain. I also wanted to be able to smoke larger meets like brisket or multiple racks of ribs. Based on my budget and criteria, I decided on the Z Grills 1000D. I purchased a bundle with many accessories from Z Grills for a great price. While I have upgraded to a larger pellet grill with Wi-Fi, I still use the 1000D.

When I am running low on time or I only want to cook a steak or a couple of hamburgers, but I still want the smokey flavor, I use my Ninja Woodfire Grill.

2. Check the Temperature Range

A good pellet grill should have a wide temperature range (typically 180°F to 500°F). If you want searing capabilities, look for models that go above 500°F.

One of the reasons that I chose Z Grills over other brands is their ability to reach high temperatures. While my 1000D will only reach 450°F, my 11002B will reach 500°F. Both of these max temperatures will sear a steak. Typically, I use my Weber Genesis propane grill for searing, but I love having options.

3. Look at the Pellet Hopper Capacity

The hopper holds the wood pellets that fuel the grill. A larger hopper means fewer refills during long smoking sessions.

When I was looking for my first pellet grill, I knew that I might want to cook larger meats like brisket. Thus, the hopper size was really important to me. I did not want to have to wake up in the middle of the night to refill the hopper.

4. Choose the Right Controller Type

PID controllers offer precise temperature control and are ideal for consistent cooking. Standard controllers may have temperature fluctuations but are often more affordable.

One of the main reasons, I decided to switch to a pellet smoker from a propane smoker was the ability to set it and forget it. Thus, investing in a smoker with a good controller was important to me.

The PID controllers have become more affordable over the past couple of years, so I advise people to stick to the PID controllers. Check out the Z Grills Backyard Warrior Below.

5. Check for Wi-Fi and Smart Features

Some modern pellet grills come with Wi-Fi connectivity, allowing you to monitor and adjust settings remotely. If you love convenience, look for models with app integration.

My first pellet smoker did not have Wi-Fi capabilities, but it was not a necessity because pellet grills, in general, do not need much attention. That being said, when the pellet smoker of my choice went on sale, I upgraded to a smoker with a Wi-Fi controller and app integration so that I could sleep or run errands during longer smokes.

I currently use the ZGrills Multitasker 11002B with Wi-Fi. Retailers often have this model on sale. Check out the current prices by clicking the links below.

6. Consider Build Quality and Materials

Heavy-duty steel construction ensures durability. Porcelain-coated grates help with easy cleaning and heat retention.

When I was shopping for my first pellet smoker, I went to many retailers to examine the smokers myself. I have had low-end grills and smokers rust within two or three years. I was looking for a pellet smoker with a sturdy build that would hold in heat and not rust. I also wanted to get the most for my money.

7.Look at Brand Reputation and Warranty

As mentioned above, I wanted a high-quality pellet smoker, but I also had a budget. Check the warranty a longer warranty often indicates better reliability.

After reading about different brands and seeing several grills in person, I narrowed down my choices to Pit Boss or Z Grills. Brands like Traeger, Weber, Green Mountain, and Camp Chef make excellent grills. However, the prices of those brands were not falling within my budget.

Z Grills has a crowdfunding special. Buy one of their pellet grills for $777 and get a new grill every five years for 50 years. You just have to pay shipping for your additional 10 grills.

8. Think About Versatility

Some pellet grills allow direct flame cooking, which is great for grilling steaks. Others focus solely on low-and-slow smoking.
